The Spud Box, Warrnambool

Most evenings on the Princess Highway you can see a group of people standing in front of a food van in the carpark of a closed tyre outlet. This is The Spud Box and I will probably be one of the people standing in line. The Spud Box is open Wednesday to Sunday evening and one of the only spud outlets around.
It can be quite hard to find a hot baked potato as very few outlets are available so when you do find one of this quality it makes the queuing worth your while. The difference I find here is that the potato is crushed at the top rather than just sliced open. Watching Jeremy create the spuds at a very impressive speed adds to the culinary experience.
A large selection of spuds are available in two different sizes (I always go for the large). Choose from meat lovers to vegetarian and many others in between as well as several sauces and salts. The service is always friendly and fast although you may have to queue for some time so if it’s raining or cold be prepared.

The Rusty Spud, Ballarat

You guessed it – this is a potato restaurant and one of the best I have had the pleasure of enjoying. With a two hour drive home after a full on visit to Ballarat I was in need of something delicious to carry me home when like an oasis the Rusty Spud appeared.
They are not open Mondays so try a different day if you like a baked potato as much as I do. The cafe is located around the corner from the Ballarat Mall and I even managed to get a park right out the front around 5 pm. Either way there is plenty of parking close by. Inside is a long bar extending to the back of the restaurant with seating and tables around the room. I chose to dine in the next room which has an eclectic feel with goods for sale and a sunken part at the front where you dine on timber pallets with cushions in front of the large window to the street.
Service was friendly and very helpful and we found the menu catered to both our desires. Worth a mention was the Mexican Spud which has corn chips impaled around the spud. Prices were very reasonable and The Rusty Spud would easily fit into the cheap eats category.
I don’t get to Ballarat often but when I do this cafe will be on my must visit list.
