Located in the South West of Victoria on the Penshurst-Warrnambool Rd is around 30 minutes from Port Fairy and a little longer to Warrnambool. This is not a tourist destination town but does have amenities that can be helpful on a long trip.
Hawkesdale has a preschool, P12 College, Football ground, public swimming pool, public toilets, post office, and a pub. It is a pretty town with the main street lined with large deciduous trees.
Although the Post Office has some basic groceries it won’t be much help to you on the weekend. The Hawkesdale Pub has a popular reputation so you might want to drop in for some refreshment or to take in a meal. They did offer takeaway fish and chips on weekend evenings but you would need to check first if you are feeling hungry.
The most important thing on a long trip is toilets. These are located at the swimming pool in the main street. There is no fuel on offer here so if you are desperate and it is before 5pm head to Woolsthorpe at the local milk bar. After 5 you are looking at Port Fairy as your closest fuel.
I like Hawkesdale with its quiet country appeal and it is worth a view on your way through.
