Gregory’s is the most impressive dining experience I have enjoyed in Port Fairy so far. In fact it is probably the best I have had in the last decade and I eat a lot as you probably know by know. So what is so special? Well to start with is the freshness.
The range of cakes is very impressive and frequently changing and baked on-site. The cafe is very busy with a good turnover so you don’t have the experience of a tired piece of cake that should have left days ago. Everyone raves about the meringue (and they should) but I have gone for the bread and butter pudding. I like cream but the chef has recommended ice-cream and she was right. Every mouthful is a delight and the ice-cream compliments the desert perfectly.
Even better the service is friendly and very accommodating. Nothing is too hard to satisfy our needs and after a delicious coffee and dessert we leave very happy and eager to return.
I haven’t mentioned the decor as I have been too busy with the food. It is modern with long bench tables on the right and more intimate tables on the left. There is a small section at the front sectioned off where you walk through large cantilevered doors. Pictures of Port Fairy adorn the walls and are very eye catching.
Lunches and dinners can be very busy so the smart thing is to book which I did. Considering the quality of the dining I have been surprised how reasonable the pricing has been. There is even a Tradies Lunch menu which may or may not require a visible vest.
This is one of the best dining experiences I have had in some time and a worthy addition to your list of must try cafes and restaurants. One of the few places I really want to get back to and makes a trip to Port Fairy well worth the drive.
